Little needs to be said about Blue Note Records, the little label that wrote Jazz history like no other. We've always wanted to do a tribute to this legendary record production factory, and because Blue Note's catalog is so huge, we've decided to introduce you to the label's history in a new Midnight Soulstice series. The day after he recorded “Think Twice,” for Welcome to Detroit, I look at the drum set, and I was like, “Wait, you recorded that on this?” And it was the most dingiest, dirtiest, not even second-hand. [It] looked like the Fat Albert junkyard gang drum set. Screws were missing; some of the heads were broken. Matter of fact, he didn’t even use real drumsticks on “Think Twice.” He used a vibraphone mallet, and he had a broken drumstick that he got some toilet paper from the bathroom, and some rubber bands. I was like, “You would rather go through this MacGuyver shit than buy new drumsticks?” He’s like, “I didn’t know where to get ’em this late at night; I had to make due.” I was like, “Well, why did you hit the drums with the mallet?” He was like, “I didn’t want the dynamic to be too aggressive. I wanted to sound muted, so I decided to play the drums with the soft cotton mallet.” It looked like putting a marshmallow at the end of a toothpick [Laughs]. Next thing I know, I’m now flying to Philadelphia—I think the next week, [to work on] The Roots’ Phrenology record [and] I tracked both “Quills” and “Pussy Galore” the same way. I went and got some orchestra mallets, and then I too started, just ’cause I seen how he got that sound.

If you know about Madlib and Oh No, you should know about Kan Kick. Based in Oxnard, CA, a sleepy beach town 40 miles north of Los Angeles, Kan Kick is a fiercely independent veteran of the west coast underground, and a legend for California hip-hop.

Kan Kick production is hazy, mellow, dusty, crunchy and filled with soul. His 2001 release, From Artz Unknown was his first official solo introduction and featured some of the west coast’s most dedicated chairmen such as; Declaime, The Visionaries, Krondon, Phil Da Agony, Planet Asia and Wildchild of The Lootpack, which he was also an early member of.

Kan Kick lives for the underground and has built a large cult following his many and hard-to-find releases. Credited by many as one of the most under-appreciated and underrated, he’ll remain as one of the most respected.

One of BTS’ closest affiliates and most frequent guest, we present a brand new mix from Kan Kick featuring lots of rare groove, soul, jazz, reggae and 18 new beats for good measure.

We invited Swedish DJ Devastate (BBE Records) to do a mix for Wax Poetics and to celebrate the release 'OptiMace – The future is not what it used to be – part 1', a brand new 7-inch out on November 24rd 2011 with remixes by Big Mister Doom, KRSUR and Illy Symphony.

”Mellow Madness Vol 2” is a mix full of laid back music inspired by the Fremdtunes sound. The mix is compiled and mixed by DJ Devastate. Devastate is a producer/DJ from South Sweden. His jazzy instrumental debut album 'Movement/Silence' was released on BBE recordings early 2010. Devastate also released a track on labelsampler 'Fremdtunes – the series 2' and is currently working on a brand new instrumental solo album and a production album with his crew Elite Fleet.

Fremdtunes is a Dutch independent recordlabel/collective, mainly focussing on (instrumental) producer-based music and worked/works with artists like DJ Optimus, Kelpe, Coco Bryce, Kid Sundance, Mister Adam,Soosh, Mister Critical, Boulaone, Jameszoo, El da Sensei, Erwin Vann, Pierce Warnecke, Superelectric, Prince Po, Klaas Verplancke, Solo Moderna, DJ Grazzhoppa, Gumshoe and many others.

Madlib Produces New Georgia Anne Muldrow Album Seeds

Seeds is the new album from psych-soul singer Georgia Anne Muldrow, out March 27 on SomeOthaShip Connect. Madlib produced the entire album. It marks the first time Muldrow has made an album with an outside producer besides her partner Dudley Perkins, and the first time Madlib has produced an entire album for a female vocalist.

The first single from the album, the titular "Seeds", is out February 14 via 7" on Fat Beats and digitally on iTunes. (The single cover is above.) Listen to the track at Rolling Stone.
